OpenLearn is a free learning platform, delivered by The Open University as part of its Royal Charter commitment to support the wellbeing of the community.

Since its launch in 2006, OpenLearn has become an integrated part of The Open University, with the site attracting more than 69 million visitors – many of which go on to make an enquiry about becoming a formal student, strengthening the journey between informal and formal learning.

The OpenLearn team originate, commission and develop content that unites faculty and University priorities with areas of topical and general interest. This is in support of our own student population in their academic, skills and career and personal development (CPD) endeavours, delivering quality assets openly available for teaching and learning.

OL deliver bite-sized learning experiences designed to fit easily into daily life, so whether you're a busy parent looking to get promoted at work, or back-packing across Africa and wanting to increase your learning, we are open with no requirements to access our free materials.

Some of OL academic-led content includes:

  • 900+ short courses (ranging from 1 - 100 hours of study)
  • thousands of articles, quizzes and interactive games
  • hundreds of videos and audios, ranging from Greek history to modern-day politics, and everything in between
  • printed posters and booklets made for our TV & radio programmes co-produced with the BBC.

Website content covers a wide range of subjects, with many of our free courses being adapted extractions from OU modules. All of our courses enable you to earn a Statement of participation and some also allow you to earn a free digital badge. You can use your badge or statement of participation to share your achievement with others although they do not carry any formal credit towards a qualification.

The course is the result of collaboration between The Open University and Rolls-Royce PLC. This collaboration has ensured that contemporary theories about risk management are explored within the context of an international company that is required to apply these theories in its business practices.

Recent decades have seen an array of news stories where risk management failings have undermined an organisation and dented the credibility of its management. These failings have led to the demise of some companies – for example Lehman Brothers, World Com and Enron. Worse than this in many instances the failings have resulted in deaths and injuries – as with the Piper Alpha oil platform disaster in the North Sea in 1988 or the BP Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill in 2010.

Successful organisations embed a culture of risk management in all areas of their activities. To achieve this requires effective and practical risk management education. The course particularly benefits all those engaged as risk managers, those seeking to develop their risk management capabilities and those, like board members, who have ultimate responsibility for risks within their organisations. Additionally all those with, or seeking, a career in management in any organisation will benefit from the understanding of risks and how to manage them.

This eight-session course examines how to practise good risk analysis and then apply successful processes to manage it. The course is supported by case studies and audio-visual materials to help explain the varied and often complex risk management practices employed at Rolls-Royce and widely elsewhere.
